Dolly Rebecca Parton is one of the most popular, famous, and iconic names in the world of entertainment. In over 60 years of career, she has broken the mold of country music singer, songwriter, actress, business woman and philanthropist into a universally loved persona.

Dolly Parton Early Life
Dolly was born on January 19, 1946 in Pittman Center, a small rural town in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, to Avie Lee Caroline and Robert Lee Parton Sr. Her family lived in a tiny one-room cabin with no electricity or running water, which made an impression on her and led her to some of her most heart-wrenching songwriting.
The core of the Parton family was music. As a child, Dolly was encouraged to perform by her mother’s stories from old-time Appalachian folk songs and a family tradition of singing in church gospel music.

By the time she was 10, she was already playing on local Knoxville radio and TV programs on The Cas Walker Show. She performed at the Grand Ole Opry at 13, where she was debuting on the stage with the legendary country singer Johnny Cash who introduced her and gave her confidence in her creativeness.
She graduated from high school in 1964 and jumped into her suitcases to see her musical dream come true the next day, in Nashville. The hallmark of Dolly Parton’s success is her songwriting. “9 to 5” (1980): This upbeat working-class anthem was penned for the hit comedy film of the same name in which she co-stars, and became a multi-genre number one smash hit.
“Islands in the Stream” (1983): her signature song with Kenny Rogers, penned by the Bee Gees, which hit #1 on the pop and country charts worldwide.
Over her career, Dolly has garnered dozens of top ten country albums, several Grammy Awards, induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after her acclaimed 2023 album “Rockstar”.

While Dolly’s career was constantly bathed in global attention, her marriage to Carl Thomas Dean for almost 60 years was a more private, yet equally powerful story. The two met in Nashville on the day Dolly arrived at 18 inside the Wishy Washy Laundromat.
Carl was a quiet supporter, very independent and was deliberately not caught up in the red carpet and the public glamour of Hollywood and Nashville, where he built a career as an asphalt paver.
The couple got married in a quiet ceremony on May 30, 1966 in Ringgold, GA. They were married for 59 years and would stay together until Carl Thomas Dean died at age 82 in 2025.
Dolly often attributed Carl’s level-headedness, practicality and quiet demeanor, and their mutual respect for providing her with the groundwork and freedom to pursue her international career.

Dolly Parton passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80 in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by family and loved ones. She died at the end of a golden era in American music and at the beginning of a wave of worldwide tributes from heads of state, musicians and millions of fans.
Her influence, though, lives on and will never fade. Dolly Parton’s spirit lives on through her relentless love and involvement in medical research, disaster relief, literacy programs, and her unforgettable musical discography, and most importantly, her continued influence to spread kindness, joy and storytelling through generations, through Dollywood, her world famous theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
